China is a huge market that is ever expanding, with a large number of veteran developers and new studios who have begun to bring their products to a bigger global audience. Developers from all over the world flock to bring their games to the insanely huge number of mobile and pc players. As console makers begin distribution in China, and Chinese developers start trying their hands at console games and high end pc graphics development, the possibilities seem endless.
The Unreal Open Day in Shanghai was attended by around 2,000 people with presentations from a wide range of developers from China and around the world. Both developers and artists were happy to catch up on the newest UE4 updates. Compared to other events there was presence by mobile developers using UE4, with many others who said they were also in development or planning to use UE4. The strength of China’s mobile market continues to be quite the power house, but the sentiment that the console and oncoming streaming market should be challenged could be easily felt as well.
In Beijing we met with various developers including Perfect World, with whom we have held a long working relationship. Every dev knows that bugs happen, and having good support can be a lifesaver. The hospitality developers show us is always outstanding, and meeting studios in person is always a great opportunity for us to talk directly with teams, help them out and see all the cool games they are working on. It’s safe to say we are never disappointed.
Being based in Tokyo, China is so close but can sometimes seem so far. We will be back with more adventures to share.
