Silicon Studio's "Enlighten" global illumination adopted by Online RPG “PHANTASY STAR ONLINE 2 NEW GENESIS”
Tokyo, Japan, (June 9, 2021) – Silicon Studio Corporation; middleware and technology developer, focusing on entertainment, gaming, automotive, video, architecture and other industries, is pleased to announce that the online RPG “PHANTASY STAR ONLINE 2 NEW GENESIS (PSO2:NGS)”, developed and operated by SEGA Corporation, will utilize Enlighten global illumination.
Adopted for “PSO2:NGS”, Enlighten is a real-time global illumination (GI) middleware. Global Illumination calculates light which is reflected or absorbed by materials or objects within scenes to accurately simulate both indirect and direct lighting.
“PSO2:NGS” is the latest game in the “PHANTASY STAR ONLINE” series, and the sequel expansion to “PHANTASY STAR ONLINE 2 (PSO2)”, one of the largest online RPG titles in Japan. “PSO” is commemorating its 20th anniversary with refurbished gaming systems and graphic engines. Its “vision of the world”, “gaming systems”, “graphic engines”, and “character creation systems” have been drastically redesigned on an impressively large scale.
“Enlighten” contributes to “PSO2:NGS” by graphically enhancing the massive open world as the environment changes to beautifully show the passage of time of day, time itself, and weather variations.

“PSO2 New Genesis” is our ultra large-scale update of “PSO2”. We decided to integrate “Enlighten” for our drastic graphic renewal.
